Geelong hero Steve Johnson was rushed to hospital with a life-threatening injury following a freak accident involving a sharp knife.
According to News Corp, the former superstar goalkicker spent Monday night in Wangaratta hospital after he suffered a wound to his stomach when a knife in a bag he was carrying punctured his abdoment.
As he was opening a gate at his home, the knife made contact with the gate and then pierced through the bag and subsequently into his stomach.
A neighbour who works as a nurse helped Johnson by applying pressure to the wound while it was bleeding heavily.
News Corp reports that he is lucky to be alive as the hospital were ready for a patient with a deep stomach wound thanks to a life-saving call from the nurse.
Johnson, one of the greatest goalkickers in modern footy, suffered damage to his bowel and has remained in the same hospital on Tuesday night, although he is expected to make a full recovery.
The former Cats and Giants star kicked 516 goals during 293 games in the AFL.
