• Boxing fans have raised questions over Tyson Fury’s latest retirement claim
  • The Gypsy King shocked the sport on Monday by revealing he has left boxing
  • Anthony Joshua and Eddie Hearn had wanted a fight with Fury for this year

Boxing fans have cast unanimous doubt over Tyson Fury’s retirement announcement that saw the Gypsy King shockingly claim he won’t be fighting again on Monday afternoon.

The 36-year-old – who is still reeling rom his heavyweight championship rematch defeat against Oleksandr Usyk – surprised the boxing world by filming a video message explaining his plans to retire.

Fury had been tipped to negotiate a Battle of Britain clash against Anthony Joshua for later this year, but those plans have now been cooled by the Gypsy King who has made similar step-away claims before.

Waving goodbye to the sport that has made Fury a two-time world champion, the veteran heavyweight stated: ‘Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet,’ he said in a clip he shared to social media.

‘I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it.

‘I’m going to end with this… Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side. GET UP!’.

However, rather than receiving legacy praise and well-wishes from supporters, Fury was instead ridiculed on social media by critics claiming this is a stunt to get a more lucrative contract offer.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn issued similar thoughts as he reacted to Fury’s cryptic comments that comes just days after Hearn revealed Wembley had been booked for a blockbuster showdown with AJ.

One critics posting on X wasn’t impressed with Fury’s latest career move, stating: ‘He’ll fight AJ this summer’ alongside a series of laughing emojis.

Another sarcastic reply on the social media platform added: ‘Erm yeah he’ll be back in 6-8 months.’

A third comment hitting out at the Gypsy King also added: ‘Just trying to push his fee up for AJ fight. I see you, Tyson.’

‘By ‘other side’ he means in a months time when he announces his next fight,’ said another online refuser who doesn’t believe Fury is telling the truth with his retirement.

Fury’s announcement has shocked boxing fans across the world, but some are questioning whether it is genuine, given the Gypsy King has previously retired from the sport.

Back in 2022, Fury revealed he was ‘done’ with boxing after beating Dillian Whyte, only to return at the end of the year after six months to fight Derek Chisora.

After beating Whyte, Fury had said: ‘I am done. Every good dog has its day. Like the great Roman leader said, there will always be someone else to fight. When is enough, enough?

‘I am happy, I am healthy. I still have my brains, I can talk, I have a beautiful wife, I have six kids, umpteen belts.

‘I have plenty of money, success, fame, glory, what more am I doing it for?’

Fury defeated Chisora by TKO before he then beat former MMA star Francis Ngannou via a controversial split decision.

Two bouts against Usyk then followed with Fury’s undefeated record going with him and leaving a bout with AJ the obvious next step prior to his retirement announcement.
