• Josh Hull made his Test debut for England in an eight-wicket loss to Sri Lanka
  • The 20-year-old bowler will not travel to Pakistan after picking up a quad injury
  • England will not replace Hull and will therefore take 16 players, rather than 17

Josh Hull has withdrawn from England’s Test tour of Pakistan because of a quad injury.

He will not be replaced in what is now a 16-man squad.

The 20-year-old left-arm quick, who picked up the niggle during his Test debut against Sri Lanka at The Oval earlier this month, had already been ruled out of the ongoing white-ball series against Australia.

‘It’s come at an annoying time because we had the white-ball stuff,’ he told The Cricketer.

‘When you get an opportunity like that you get in the mix you want to keep on going.

Hull had been hoping to earn his second Test cap after debuting against Sri Lanka recently

He took three Sri Lankan wickets at The Oval but England were well beaten in that match

‘It’s given me a lot to think about in terms of where I want to improve to get to play at that level. It was hopefully the start of a journey.’

The ECB confirmed the story, and said the 6ft 7in Hull would ‘continue his recovery’.

It is understood he will instead be involved with England Lions this winter, culminating in a trip to Australia.

Hull bowled 102 balls and claimed three wickets at a cost of 91 runs during England’s third Test against Sri Lanka in London, where the tourists won comfortably.
