With the year almost over, many people will already be planning their next escape.

That’s especially the case for Luxembourgers.

Our World in Data analysis implies people hailing from the landlocked nation sandwiched between France, Germany and Belgium make 4.3 international trips a year, on average.

Slovenia, meanwhile, ranks second on the list.

Residents in the central European country – nicknamed the continent’s ‘rising star’ for its historic cities, dazzling lakes and soaring peaks – go abroad 1.4 times a year.

Belgians (1.3) follow in third place.

These trips abroad could also be counted as business trips as Our World In Data defines them as one instance of travelling abroad and staying overnight.

It comes after research by the ABTA travel association in October found Brits are going on more holidays than ever.

Britons took on average 3.94 holidays during the last 12 months, with Spain remaining the most popular overseas destination.

This was up slightly from the previous year and overtaking the peak of 3.91 in 2019 before the Covid pandemic brought travel to a standstill.

That data, based on a survey of 2,000 people, jars with separate analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), however.

The ONS found that Brits made 71million trips abroad in 2022, effectively putting Britain at just above the one foreign trip a year threshold.

Yet this figure increased to 86.2million in 2023.

UK residents visited Spain the most in 2023, accounting for 21 per cent of all visits abroad, ONS figures showed.

This was followed by France (11 per cent), Italy (6 per cent) and Greece (5 per cent).

Our World in Data, which compiled the table, said: ‘Tourism has massively increased in recent decades.

‘Aviation has opened up travel from domestic to international. Before the Covid pandemic, the number of international visits had more than doubled since 2000.

‘Tourism can be important for both the travelers and the people in the countries they visit.

‘For visitors, traveling can increase their understanding of and appreciation for people in other countries and their cultures.

‘And in many countries, many people rely on tourism for their income. In some, it is one of the largest industries.’
