Joanna Trollope, the bestselling novelist affectionately dubbed the “queen of the Aga saga” for her tales of romance and domestic drama set in middle England, has died at the age of 82.

Her family confirmed the news this morning, with her daughters Louise and Antonia releasing a statement announcing their mother’s passing.

The prolific author, whose works captured the complexities of relationships and family life in rural and suburban Britain, leaves behind a substantial literary legacy spanning decades.

Her distinctive focus on the lives, loves and tribulations of middle-class English society earned her both critical recognition and a devoted readership, with her novels becoming fixtures on bestseller lists throughout her career.

Trollope passed away peacefully at her home in the Cotswolds on Thursday, December 11.

Her daughters shared their grief in a joint statement, describing her as their “beloved and inspirational mother” who died at her Oxfordshire residence.

Louise and Antonia confirmed the news, paying tribute to the woman who had shaped both their lives and the landscape of contemporary British fiction.

The author spent her final moments in the comfort of her countryside home, the very setting that had inspired so much of her celebrated work exploring English provincial life.

Her death at 82 brings to a close a remarkable career that saw her become one of the nation’s most recognisable literary voices, particularly beloved for her insightful portrayals of domestic relationships.

Trollope’s extensive body of work included such acclaimed titles as The Rector’s Wife, Marrying The Mistress, Daughters in Law and City of Friends.

Her stories resonated far beyond British shores, with her novels translated into more than 25 languages, bringing her distinctive voice to readers across the globe.

Several of her books made the transition from page to screen, with television adaptations introducing her characters and narratives to even wider audiences.

The author’s ability to craft compelling stories around the intricacies of family dynamics, marriage and social expectations in contemporary Britain established her as a defining voice in popular fiction.

Her work consistently explored themes of love, betrayal and the quiet dramas that unfold within seemingly ordinary households across England.

James Gill, Trollope’s literary agent, expressed profound sorrow at the news of her death.

In a statement, he said: “It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Joanna Trollope, one of our most cherished, acclaimed and widely enjoyed novelists.”

Gill added: “Joanna will be mourned by her children, grandchildren, family, her countless friends and – of course – her readers.”

His tribute underscored the breadth of affection felt for the author, whose warmth and talent touched not only those in her personal circle but the millions who found solace and entertainment in her fiction.

The outpouring of grief reflects the significant place Trollope occupied in British literary culture, having entertained generations of readers with her perceptive storytelling.
