Northumberland has been named as the UK’s most sought-after staycation destination for 2025, according to new booking data.

The northern county has outpaced traditional favourites to claim the top spot in holiday bookings for the year ahead.

The New Forest secured second place in the rankings by holidaycottages.co.uk, whilst Scotland rounded out the top three most popular destinations.

Known for its tranquil beaches, historic castles and quaint villages, Northumberland’s rise reflects a growing trend among British holidaymakers seeking destinations beyond conventional hotspots.

Northumberland’s appeal lies in its diverse offerings, from snug eateries to its picturesque North Sea coastline. Visitors can explore sprawling beaches, rugged moorlands and numerous nature reserves teeming with wildlife.

The county has gained particular attention on social media, with TikTok users discovering hidden gems like Cragside House and Gardens, a National Trust site.

The New Forest, securing second place, offers one of Britain’s largest remaining areas of unenclosed pastureland.

Wild ponies and centuries-old oak trees characterise this peaceful retreat, popular among those seeking respite from urban life. Historic towns like Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst provide visitors with cosy pubs and artisan shops.

Scotland’s third-place ranking is driven by popular regions including Dumfries and Galloway, Argyll and Bute, and Perth and Kinross.

The country’s appeal spans from Edinburgh Castle to the dramatic landscapes of Glencoe and the Isle of Skye’s fairy pools.

Outdoor enthusiasts are particularly drawn to Scotland’s offerings, including the famous West Highland Way.

Chief commercial officer at holidaycottages.co.uk Joby Mussell said: “The UK is home to so many incredible spots for a getaway, and from trawling through the data, it’s exciting to see that holiday-goers are exploring beyond the usual favourites.

“The best thing about this is that there is something for everyone – whether you’re after an escape to the country or a more adventurous, adrenaline-filled break.

“Hidden gems and lesser-known destinations are really having their moment, offering unique experiences that are clearly in high demand.”

Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria ranks second on the watch list, offering elegant promenades and coastal views. Truro in Cornwall is also seeing increased bookings, with its Lemon Street Gallery experiencing a 350 per cent rise in Google searches.
