Strictly Come Dancing teased a major announcement on Wednesday, before former star Janette Manrara made the revelation on spin-off show, It Takes Two.

After getting fans’ hopes up for a big addition to the show, the 40-year-old shared how a new theme week would be introduced as part of the 20th series celebrations – but many were unimpressed.

It was confirmed Icons Week would be making its debut this year, complementing the other themed weeks of Musicals, Movies and Blackpool Week.

It’s safe to say fan reaction to the news was mixed though, with many arguing there are already enough theme weeks and calling for less of them. Others even went as far as asking for a TV licence refund.

Icons will see the couples taking to the dance floor to honour music legends, paying tribute to some of the most recognisable and influential people in the industry.

Couples will dance to songs from their music heroes and audiences may even catch some contestants emulating an icon.

Taking to X, Strictly viewers shared candid reactions to the announcement.

One remarked: “Let’s hope the choices made really are music icons to make it a success. The BBC themes week a few years ago really was the worst week ever in Strictly history as the music was so dire.”

“Can we stop with the themes & just concentrate on the dancing, themes just detract from the skill, awful idea,” another asked.

“Stop turning it into the American show,” someone else fumed.

A fourth didn’t hold back as they penned: “I don’t know who from dancing on ice you imbeciles hired but please sack them immediately. BBC week was terrible. We don’t need more gimmick weeks. Also, please refund my TV licence.”

“It’s taken Strictly Come Dancing 20 years to come up with a new theme week,” another unimpressed fan commented.

However, there were some who were glad to hear the news, with one excitedly adding: “I called it! Music Icons week, let’s gooooo! #strictly #ittakestwo.” (sic)
