Halifax is set to close dozens of bank branches within the next year in a blow to many local communities with the bank recently confirming extra closures.

Bank branch closures are gathering pace across the UK amid changes to the banking sector and consumer behaviour.

As part of Lloyds Banking Group, the Halifax locations earmarked for closure are part of a larger group of 60 branches shutting down.

The other banks included in the group are Lloyds Bank and the Bank of Scotland.

In recent years, other high street banks have closed locations including NatWest, HSBC and Barclays.

These new closures from Halifax are set to take place between October 2024 and June 2025, with 17 sites to shut down on top of previously announced ones.

One of the options being considered to replace traditional branches is banking hubs, with banks also improving their online services.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson shared with GB News why: “Mobile banking is more popular than ever with over 19 million customers choosing our app to manage their money.

“Alongside our app, customers can bank online, over the phone, at a Banking Hub, a Post Office or by speaking to one of our Community Bankers.”

Some 19 million Lloyds Banking Group customers have reportedly changed to mobile banking as it easier, the group claims.

As well as this, the sites chosen to be closed have seen a footfall drop by 52 per cent in the last half a decade.

Despite dozens of areas being impacted, anywhere affected will have access to other options for access cash, including the Post Office or ATMs.

Additionally, 28 Community Bankers will be rolled out to help address any negative impact of the closures.
