• Mark Waugh wants Aussie pace attack to be more aggressive
  • Follows hammering in first Test versus India in Perth
  • Waugh feels young gun Yashasvi Jaiswal must be targeted

Aussie cricket legend Mark Waugh has called for the likes of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins to ‘ruffle up’ Indian rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of the second Test in Adelaide.

Waugh, 59, wants to see the quicks intimidate opening batsman Jaiswal, with short-pitched bowling essential in the day-night clash.

‘We bowled pretty well most of the game [in Perth], but I did think we lacked a little bit of aggression,’ Waugh told News Corp.

‘I would like to see a bit more short stuff, maybe ruffling the feathers of the Indian batsmen.

‘Jaiswal is a tremendous player. He’s a young guy, he’s 22. We hardly ruffled him up at all.

‘I think we can be a bit more aggressive at certain times with the ball and body language.

‘It looked a bit flat at times.’

Waugh also felt Cummins was ‘underdone’ at Optus Stadium and believed the skipper should have played Shield cricket for NSW ahead of the series opener.

Australia had no answers when it came to Yashasvi Jaiswal, who plundered a brilliant 161 in India’s second innings in Perth

Cummins also shocked cricket fans when he opted to attend a Coldplay music concert during one of Australia’s warm-up matches against Pakistan.

‘You really want to hit the ground running,’ Waugh said.

‘I’m a bit old fashioned. It was a bit different in our day. We played a lot. We’d have a Shield match before a Test match.

‘But times have changed and the schedule dictates a lot of preparation.’

Waugh went onto state the top order – including the embattled Marnus Labuschagne – need to find a way to combat Indian quick Jasprit Bumrah.

He feels the Queenslander’s problem is ‘thinking about cricket 24 hours a day’ and urged the former world number 1 batsman to make some technical changes at the crease.

The second Test at Adelaide Oval begins on December 6.
