Asda is expanding its partnership with Too Good To Go, the world’s largest surplus food marketplace app, to nearly 1,000 sites across the UK.

The initiative, rolling out now, aims to reduce food waste by offering customers discounted Surprise Bags filled with surplus but still edible food items.

The partnership will cover Asda supermarkets, Asda Express stores and various food service outlets within Asda locations, including LEON, Greggs, Sbarro, and Subway.

This expansion follows a successful trial and builds upon Asda’s existing efforts to minimise food waste through innovative solutions.

Customers can purchase Surprise Bags from Asda supermarkets for £3.30, containing a minimum of £9 worth of goods.

These bags may include chilled items, ready meals, food to go, prepared fruit or salads, bakery products and perishables like dairy, meat, fish or poultry.

Bags from Asda Express and partner outlets will also be available at varying prices. Contents could range from breakfast items to dinner options and even cakes and pastries.

To access these deals, customers can use the Too Good To Go app to locate participating Asda stores and collect their Surprise Bags within the specified time window.

Asda Vice President for Commercial Strategy, Operations & Own Brand Sam Dickson said: “We’re delighted to be bringing Too Good To Go to more sites across our estate and our food service partners, as we remain committed to reducing food waste through innovative solutions.

“We’ve already seen great uptake from customers using Too Good To Go, and experienced the impact it can make towards reducing food waste.

“Alongside our existing food waste reduction partners, Too Good To Go will play an important role in continuing the progress we’ve made to date in minimising waste and supporting customers, communities and charities.”

Country director at Too Good To Go UK and Ireland Sophie Trueman added: “Our team is absolutely thrilled to be rolling out our partnership with Asda, helping to combat food waste and provide great value to customers.

“At Too Good To Go we believe that saving food from going to waste is a win-win-win – businesses can recover the sunk cost of would-be wasted food, consumers can get good food for less, and with one simple action, we’re collectively doing something great for the planet by stopping that food from ending up in landfill.”

This helps cut back on food waste

ASDA

This partnership with Too Good To Go is part of Asda’s broader strategy to combat food waste. Since 2021, the initiative has saved over two million kilograms of food from being wasted.

In June, Asda expanded its back of store food donation scheme, partnering with FareShare and Olio. This three-way collaboration added 680 donation slots to Asda’s programme.

The retailer continues to support FareShare’s network of over 8,500 charities and community organisations.

These efforts align with Asda’s commitment to reducing environmental impact and supporting local communities, whilst providing customers with affordable options during challenging economic times.
