Nigel Farage has slammed Labour live on GB News after Rachel Reeves’ latest speech this morning, preparing the ground for her upcoming Budget.
The GB News star hit out at the Chancellor for “whacking up taxes” last year after Labour had told voters during the General Election campaign that they would not increase income tax, VAT and National Insurance.
Speaking on Farage, the presenter said: “As we expected and as has been leaked already, that taxes are going to go up there, she wasn’t specific about which ones they would be. I think we all assume it is going to be income tax, but I wonder what was the point of all of that at 8:10 this morning?
“Was it simply to calm the markets? I simply don’t know. In fact, what was it all about?”
When grilled earlier today, Ms Reeves’ spokesman said that the Chancellor does not regret potential breaches of Labour’s manifesto promise not to raise certain taxes.
“Those manifesto commitments were made because we recognised that working people had been asked to pay the price of 14 years of Conservative failure.”
Pressed on concerns that breaking manifesto pledges could further erode public trust in politicians, Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesman added: “Voters put their trust in Government to make tough decisions, not just popular ones.
“We’ll do whatever is necessary to protect families from high inflation and interest rates, protect our public services and guarantee the investment necessary for our economic future.”
