A 17-year-old boy has been arrested today on suspicion of attempted murder after three people were injured at a secondary school in Sheffield.

The incident is reported to have involved “a sharp object”, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Following the incident, Birely Academy issued a statement, saying: “This morning we went into lockdown as a precaution following an incident at the school.

“This was not a decision taken lightly but the safety of students and staff is paramount. All students and staff are safe.

“We are working closely with the police and will update shortly.”

The incident comes just days after two teachers were injured in an alleged knife attack by a teenage girl at a school in Wales.

The teenage girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was remanded to youth detention accommodation when she appeared in court on Friday.

She will next appear at Swansea Crown Court on May 24.
