Labour’s Annelise Dodds says the tragedy in the English Channel underlines the need for the Government to get a grip on the gangs behind the migrant crisis.
Speaking to GB News, Ms Dodds said: “This is clearly awful, really dreadful news overnight.
“I think people will be thinking about what it must have been like in the freezing cold darkness, and the fear that must have been felt.
“This really underlines the fact that these criminal gangs who are running these journeys across the channel are putting so many people’s lives at risk. They’ve got to be broken up. They’re making a profit through this. And Labour has been absolutely clear, Labour wouldn’t be spending money on Rwanda. Labour has a different approach. And above all, it’s focused on breaking up those criminal gangs. “So we would be making sure that we had a joint elite police unit that was focused on these criminal gangs, because we’ve seen the rate of prosecutions of criminal people smugglers actually going down over recent years.
“We need to have a focus on that, we need to be processing claims as well. That’s why Labour say we’d hire 1000 more caseworkers because there’s a huge backlog. We’d be getting a grip on that.”
