Aldi has issued a recall for The Fishmonger Soy & Ginger Fusions Tuna product due to the presence of undeclared wheat (gluten) on the label.

The presence of such allergens could pose a significant health risk for individuals with coeliac disease or those with wheat or gluten allergies or intolerances, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) cautioned.

The supermarket chain urges customers who have purchased the 99p item to return to the store immediately.

Aldi has also contacted relevant allergy support organisations to inform their members about the recall and has issued a recall notice to customers explaining the situation.

Aldi’s notice read: “Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given.

“We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation.”

A statement on the FSA website contains the following product details:

The Fishmonger Soy & Ginger Fusions Tuna

  • Pack size: 80g
  • Batch code: All codes
  • Best before: All dates

The FSA echoed Aldi’s advice: “If you have bought the above product and have coeliac disease, and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, do not eat it.

It added: “This product contains wheat (gluten) making it a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease, and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.”

Reactions to wheat can vary and may be due to IgE mediated (immediate allergy), Non IgE mediated (delayed allergy), coeliac disease (an autoimmune response), fermentation in the gut due to fructans (carbohydrates) in wheat or gluten sensitivity.

Some people with coeliac disease present with symptoms of bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, wind, constipation, tiredness, sudden or unexpected weight loss, hair loss, joint or bone pain, pines and needles, infertility or repeat miscarriages and anaemia.

Customers affected by the product recall are advised to visit help.aldi.co.uk or contact customer services on 0800 042 0800.

When are foods recalled?

The FSA explained why supermarkets occasionally pull products from shelves.

A food recall is issued when there is a “problem with a food product that means it should not be sold”.

It added: “It might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).

“Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk.

“When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”
