While there is no way to guarantee longevity, your lifestyle can greatly increase your chances of living longer.

A doctor has shared vital advice on how to extend lifespan through diet and lifestyle changes.

Chief medical officer at Indiana Center for Recovery Dr Michael Kane spoke to GB News to emphasise the importance of nutrition, saying it is “essential above all else”.

His recommendations focused on incorporating whole, plant-based foods whilst limiting processed options, combined with proactive health management.

Dr Kane said: “Longevity is influenced by a mix of genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors, and while we can’t change our genes, there is plenty we can do to improve our habits and surroundings.”

For diet, look to fill up on nutritious whole foods while reducing how much sugar and processed foods you consume.

The doctor continued: “I believe that a nutritious diet is essential above all. Eating more whole, plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds can significantly lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, which is why I recommend them.”

His dietary guidance focuses specifically on incorporating natural, unprocessed ingredients as the foundation for a longer, healthier life.

Beyond dietary recommendations, Dr Kane suggested a comprehensive approach to healthy living. He emphasised the importance of limiting processed foods, sugar and unhealthy fats in daily nutrition.

The medical expert also stresses the value of maintaining an active lifestyle and getting enough sleep.

Building strong social connections is another key element of his longevity recommendations. These lifestyle factors work together with proper nutrition to support overall health and longevity.

He concluded: “As they say, prevention is always better than cure. Have regular check-ups with your doctor, stay up-to-date on vaccinations, and screen for health conditions early on to help you stay ahead of potential issues.

“In addition to that, combine this with avoiding harmful habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.”
