With its rolling hills, sun-kissed vineyards and medieval hilltop towns, it is little wonder Tuscany is the destination of choice for the A-list.

But now it seems a chance to taste la dolce vita alongside the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie no longer requires their bank balance.

The Italian region is a surprise inclusion in a list of this summer’s cheapest package destinations, coming seventh in Which? Travel’s study of bargain August holidays.

The consumer champion, which analysed nearly 6,000 package holidays from three different providers – easyjet Holidays, TUI and Jet2Holidays – in 13 European countries, found some ‘real surprises’ in among the traditional budget destinations.

For example, a holiday in self-catered accommodation in Tuscany for the first week of August could cost only £1,034 per person on average this year.

Plenty of packages remain available, which has forced the prices down, with cheap flights for room-only, self-catering and bed and breakfast accommodation available in coastal towns or inland around Florence, the Tuscan capital.

Which? suggested the heatwaves of recent summers could be the reason for the drop in prices as visitors look to avoid the sweltering August weather.

Tuscany was not the only Italian destination on the list. The Venetian Riviera – a purpose-built beach resort on Venice’s lagoon – was fourth cheapest.
