Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin has led heartbreaking tributes to Catherine O’Hara, who starred alongside him in the popular Christmas films as his mother.

Ms O’Hara died on Friday, January 30, with the cause of her death not yet confirmed.

As well as featuring in the first two Home Alone movies, Ms O’Hara was well-known for playing comic character Moira Rose in sitcom Schitt’s Creek.

She shared a a close relationship with Mr Culkin which far exceeded their last Home Alone film, which was released in 1992.

Several famous faces have taken to social media to issues tributes in the wake of the news, with Mr Culkin posting a heartbreaking photo and caption.

On Instagram, the 45-year-old posted an iconic still from Home Alone of the moment the mother and son were finally reunited, along with a re-created image of the actors taken decades later.

In a devastating caption, the actor penned: “Mama. I thought we had time.

“I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you.

“But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

Actor Pedro Pascal, who starred alongside Ms O’Hara last year in The Last of Us, also shared a sad tribute.

Alongside a photo of the two of them on the set of the popular series, he wrote: “Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful.

“There is less light in my world, this lucky world that had you, will keep you, always. Always. The one and ONLY #CatherineOHara.”

Fellow Canadian Michael Bublé also penned a lengthy tribute on social media.

He wrote: “Heartbroken doesn’t even begin to cover it. Catherine O’Hara was one of a kind.

“A rare light in this world and her passing hits with a weight I can’t fully put into words.

“She wasn’t just a legendary artist, actor and comedian. She was an ambassador for Canada in the truest sense: brilliant, fearless, deeply original, and so full of humanity. She made the world laugh, but she also made people feel seen.

“As an artist, she inspired me more than she’ll ever know. She set the bar for what it means to represent your country with excellence and grace and all without ever losing warmth or humility.

“My heart is broken for her family, her loved ones, and everyone who adored her, both here in Canada and around the world.

“If you’re grieving this loss, you’re not alone. We’re all holding a piece of this sadness together.”

He concluded: “Rest easy, Catherine. Thank you for everything.”

Her Schitt’s Creek co-stars have yet to break their silence on the sad news but are likely to post similar messages themselves.

Ms O’Hara first rose to prominence as part of the ensemble cast on SCTV, the groundbreaking Canadian sketch comedy programme that served as a launching pad for numerous comedy talents.

Her film career flourished with memorable performances in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice and Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries Best in Show and A Mighty Wind.

She portrayed Macaulay Culkin’s mother Kate McCallister in the beloved Home Alone franchise, a role that introduced her to audiences worldwide.

Perhaps her most iconic television performance came in 2015 when she began playing the flamboyant Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek, a character she inhabited for six seasons.

The role represented a full-circle return to her television roots and earned her widespread critical acclaim.

She also lent her voice to Sally in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Her extensive career earned her numerous accolades, including two Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
