When planning a romantic trip many couples might consider visiting Paris, known as the ‘city of love’, or a getaway to a scenic Italian coastal spot.

Most people probably wouldn’t think of landmarks like the Great Wall of China, or a 6km walking route from Bondi to Coogee in Australia.

Alternatively, a mosque might not be the first thing that comes to mind either.

But, new research by Go2Africa found the 20 most romantic landmarks across the world after analysing 1.5 million reviews from couples.

Surprisingly, the Eiffel Tower placed 68th overall. Instead the most romantic landmark in the world proved to be The Matterhorn, in Switzerland.

The near-symmetrical mountain in the Alps received four to five star ratings from 98.66 per cent of couples.

Many described it as an ‘unforgettable experience’ and warned visitors to ‘be prepared to be awestruck’.

The impressive mountain is perfect for those hoping to go skiing, or take a romantic train ride across the area.

The second most romantic landmark will take travellers to the other side of the globe – all the way to Bolivia, in South America.

Salar de Uyuni, also known as ‘salt flat at Uyuni’, scored 98.55 per cent.

It’s a particularly photogenic spot and during the rainy season the floor becomes mirror-like, making for impressive views.

Elsewhere, Sydney Harbour in Australia placed third and saw 98.48 per cent of couples leaving great reviews.

It offers great views of the city and is a good place for a walk, with Go2Africa describing it as ‘one of the most beautiful places in the country’.

Made of seven jaw-dropping waterfalls, Les 7 Cascades in Mauritius is an island covered in lush greenery.

It ranks fourth overall, and is perfect for couples wanting to swim, hike, and enjoy the natural environment.

Meanwhile, the Great Wall of China placed fifth and saw 98.11 per cent of couples rating it highly.

Finishing off the top ten, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center in the United Arab Emirates saw 97.51 per cent of couples leaving high reviews

The Iguazu Falls in Brazil ranked sixth, followed by the Grand Canyon in America.

Closer to home, Arthur’s Seat placed eighth with many couples seeing the extinct volcano in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh as a good spot to visit together.

Elsewhere, Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe ranked ninth.

Finishing off the top 10, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center in the United Arab Emirates saw 97.51 per cent of couples leaving high reviews.
