Malta’s capital city, Valletta, has been handed the coveted title of best city in the world.

The European hotspot is known for its Mediterranean sun, as well as fabulous architecture, great food and impressive prices.

Valletta has ties to the British royal family, too – and it’s full of historical sights to visit.

The late Queen Elizabeth II lived just outside the city in the early years of her marriage to Prince Philip during his time in the navy, before she took to the throne.

But the walled city dates back even further. It was established in the 1500s on a peninsula by the Knights of St. John, a Roman Catholic order.

The historic significance of Valletta has not gone unnoticed – indeed, the whole city is listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site.

Valletta was given the accolade of best city in the world at the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards 2025.

And it’s an affordable place to consider for your next holiday.

A beer in the city will only set you back around €2.12 (£1.85), according to Holidays in Malta.

What’s more, due to its ties with Britain, the vast majority of people in Malta speak English. This means you won’t have to navigate a substantial language barrier if you travel there.

And the weather is great all year round, with temperatures on 17C even in December.

There’s plenty to do in the city as well – from museums to historical monuments and shopping.

The Grand Harbour is a key sight to see, and you can even do cruises around the area.

Alternatively, you can visit Saint John’s Co-Cathedral, a marble and gold cathedral.

Or try out Valletta’s food and drink scene.

Malta is known for national dish of rabbit stew, as well as popular snacks such as pastizzi (savory pastries), ftira (Maltese bread), and qassatat (small pies).

Flights to Valletta are short and convenient, too.

The average flight time is three hours and 20 minutes from London to Malta International Airport.

Prices can start from as little as £36, too – making Valletta a cheap and convenient travel option.

It’s on the coast, too, making it great for beach holidays.
