Veteran actress Diane Langton has died at the age of 77, her agent confirmed today.
Shane Collins announced the news in a statement, saying: “I am sad to say that Diane Langton passed away this morning.”
The star was best known for her role as Nana McQueen in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks, which she played intermittently since 2008.
The Somerset-born actress had a career spanning more than six decades in British television and film.
Langton’s portrayal of Nana McQueen became one of her most enduring roles, with the actress appearing in Hollyoaks for 18 years.
Her character became an iconic presence on the Channel 4 soap, where she remained a recurring cast member until her death.
The role of Nana McQueen marked a significant chapter in her extensive television career.
Langton’s career in entertainment began in 1959 with her debut role as a schoolgirl in the film Carry On Teacher.
She went on to feature in the television spin-off series Carry On Laughing, marking her continued association with the popular comedy franchise.
Her early work laid the foundation for what would become a prolific career in British entertainment, spanning multiple decades.
The actress established herself across various beloved UK comedies and dramas throughout her career.
Among her notable television appearances, Langton played June Snell in two episodes of Only Fools and Horses during the 1980s.
She also took on the role of Bev Williams in EastEnders in the following decade.
Throughout her career, she moved effortlessly between comedy and drama, appearing in some of the nation’s most-watched shows.
Reflecting on the actress’ career, her agent Collins added: “Diane had a rich and remarkable career appearing on Stage, in Films, and on television, including playing the iconic Nana Mqueen in Hollyoaks from 2007 to the present day.”
He continued: “Diane trained at the Corona Academy and started her professional career as a dancer, touring with ballet companies throughout Europe, followed by appearances on That Was the Week That Was and The London Palladium.”
