Reform UK leader Nigel Farage shouted “We have done it” as the party supassed the Conservative membership this morning.
The milestone marks a dramatic rise for Nigel Farage’s party, which had just 40,000 members before his return as leader in June 2024.
The achievement comes after a concentrated membership drive, including a Christmas Day push for new sign-ups and special deals for under-25s.
The Conservative Party, which boasted 2.8 million members in the early 1950s and 200,000 in 2021, has seen its grassroots base decline to 131,680 members as reported in November.
Reacting to the milestone, Nigel Farage said: “This is a big, historic moment. The youngest political party in British politics has just overtaken the oldest political party in the world. Reform UK are now the real opposition.”
Reform UK Chairman Zia Yusuf declared: “History has been made today, as the centuries-long stranglehold on the centre-right of British politics by the Tories has finally been broken.”
Yusuf added confidently: “Nigel Farage will be the next Prime Minister, and will return Britain to greatness.”
The party’s rapid growth included a 300 per cent increase in membership over just eight months, with an immediate boost of 25,000 members following Farage’s return to leadership.
