Denzel Washington has revealed his confusion when he met King Charles the day before the monarch’s birthday.
The King made a solo appearance at the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square in London on Wednesday.
He joined actors Paul Mescal, 28, and Denzel Washington, 69, alongside director Ridley Scott for the Gladiator II premiere.
Although His Majesty, 76, was supposed to be joined by his wife, Queen Camilla, 77, she was absent from the event as she continues to recover from a chest infection.

But veteran actor Washington appeared confused as he said to King Charles, shaking his hand: “I didn’t know if I was supposed to grab you or not, but it’s my pleasure.”
He added: “I’m just, you know, an awful… I’m a lovely man you’ll see. I’m a lovely chap.”
He repeated: “I’m a lovely chap and doing my best.”
King Charles replied: “You’ve been in so many films, it’s fantastic.”

King Charles has been the charity’s patron since 2022, following the death of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Earlier in the evening, Camilla told the film’s director Sir Ridley Scott: “I am so sorry I’m not coming tonight. I’d be coughing throughout it.”
The King asked Hollywood legend Washington: “Are you playing someone terrible?”
Charles also warmly shook hands with Scott, who appeared to say they would talk after the movie.
Gladiator II arrives in theatres on Friday, November 22.
