The hosts of The View marked Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory with a sombre display, as most panellists donned all-black outfits for their post-election episode on Wednesday.
Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro all wore dark ensembles in what viewers described as “funeral attire”.
Whoopi Goldberg opted for a pink floral jacket and white shirt but notably refused to utter Trump’s name throughout the broadcast.
She opened the show by simply asking: “So what happened last night? He’s the president. I’m still not going to say his name.
“That’s not going to change,” she declared, setting the tone for the emotional episode.
Hostin expressed profound disturbance at the election outcome, highlighting her deep concerns about the future of American society.
“If you look at The New York Times this morning, the headline was ‘America Makes a Perilous Choice’. We know now he will have almost unfettered power.”
The co-host voiced particular worry for vulnerable groups, including the working class, elderly citizens, and their social security and Medicare benefits.
“As a woman of colour, I was so hopeful that a mixed race woman married to a Jewish guy could be elected president of this country.”
She concluded that the result “had nothing to do with policy” but rather represented “a referendum of cultural resentment in this country”.

Behar – a long-time critic of Trump – attempted to keep a measured tone despite her opposition to the result.
“We live in a democracy. People spoke. This is what people wanted. I vehemently disagree with the decision that Americans made, but I feel very, very hopeful that we have a democratic system in this country,” she said.
“We should value it. We should love it. We should protest if the situation arises that we need to protest, which I’m sure it will. I’ve been there before with [Richard] Nixon. We have a country and we can keep it.”
Behar’s emphasis on accepting the democratic process, whilst maintaining her right to disagree, stood out among the emotional responses of her co-hosts.
Navarro, meanwhile, acknowledged Trump’s victory but made a firm commitment to continue advocacy efforts.
“I have no regrets. I worked hard as hell to elect the first Black, Asian woman president. Unlike Donald Trump and his followers, I acknowledge that he won. I make a commitment to our LGBTQ, to our immigrants, to our elderly, young girls, women, we will not stop fighting,” she stated.

The all-black wardrobe choice combined with the panel’s overall opposition towards Trump – particularly Goldberg’s refusal to say his name – sparked quite the reaction from viewers at home.
One user slammed: “Your show is a prime example of why the country is so divided.”
Another added: “You should all be ashamed of yourselves and resign for the level of lying you did to this entire Country and our families. Absolutely fallen from grace.”
“She didn’t win because she isn’t qualified. She couldn’t put a sentence together without a teleprompter. It had nothing to do with race or gender,” a third suggested while someone else fumed: “You are all so very sad. There is always a winner and a loser. The people chose a mandate this time. Popular and electoral votes. We are sick of communism, inflation, being invaded by terrorists and criminals and we are sick of being called names.”
Another annoyed fan penned: “Bull! You may have not told people who to vote for, but you sure trashed Trump enough! Lol, are you moving yet? I’ll help you pack!”
However, not all the reaction was negative, as one fan wrote: “Love your all black outfits. What a disappointing outcome that was. I will be grieving the country.” (sic)
