Stress, anxiety and struggles getting to sleep are all common problems for many Britons, but that doesn’t mean people must suffer in silence.

An expert shared the supplements that can help promote relaxation and make it easier to achieve good sleep.

Feeling stressed is one of the main reasons people struggle to sleep at night and getting the right vitamins and nutrients into your diet can help relieve symptoms, according to TRIP’s Head of Product, Rachael Matthews (ANutr).

The expert recommended a combination of ingredients including magnesium, lion’s mane, lemon balm and chamomile, as found in supplements and drinks such as the TRIP Mindful Blend range.

Rachel explained: “The combination of ‘actives’ [in the drinks] has been carefully researched and chosen to bring about a calming effect, with magnesium being the most widely researched of the suite with hundreds of studies showing positive links to relaxation and balance.

“Some studies have shown that consistent magnesium supplementation may lead to a reduction of cortisol levels, the stress hormone, within just 28 days.

“We’ve infused each can with 120mg of magnesium citrate, one of the most bioavailable forms of the mineral, roughly 1⁄3 of your daily recommended allowance.”

Research shared by the Sleep Foundation echoed the benefits of magnesium for getting better sleep. It said: “Higher levels of magnesium in the body are associated with better sleep, longer sleep times, and less tiredness during the day.

“Studies of older adults also found that magnesium supplementation helped with falling asleep faster and protected against waking up earlier than intended.”

It added that “research suggests that magnesium helps people keep healthy sleep schedules”.

Lion’s mane is another supplement that has risen in popularity recently, and it has also been linked to reducing stress levels.

Rachel spoke more on the benefits of this: “Lion’s mane, a type of mushroom, which has been linked in early studies’ to improve cognitive function, stress perception and mood has been gaining traction and popularity globally.

“Lion’s mane may also influence the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin and dopamine.

“These neurotransmitters play a role in mood regulation, and alterations in their levels can affect emotional well-being.

“Although this is based on early studies and more research is needed. Customers have reported feeling relaxed; having a clearer mind; and sleeping better after consuming Mindful Blends.”

Some studies have also looked into the link between sleep and lion’s mane in those with conditions such as dementia or obesity.

A 2019 study of 77 obese or overweight participants found taking the supplement for eight weeks relieved depression, anxiety and sleep disorders.
